The Solo Challenge is the essence of the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, a one lap circuit of Lake Taupo of approximately 160 km.
The Course starts and finishes on Tongariro Street, next to Taupo's Great Lake Centre and heads in an anti-clockwise direction around Lake Taupo, which is 357 m above sea level. The highest point on the course is at 650 m.
The event caters for riders of all abilities and no special equipment is required, just a helmet, a safe bike and the determination to finish.
ENTRANT SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT
As a safety measure, the start of the solo ride is split into different starting groups. Each group is started in waves with several minutes between each wave to allow riders to spread out.
Starting Group Allocation
You are asked to choose a start group based on the time you estimate it will take you to complete the solo challenge.
Times are recorded electronically by the wheel tag as you cross the start and finish lines so no group will be disadvantaged.
For everybody’s safety please select your start group realistically & carefully.
There will be no changes to start groups allowed after 6 November.
Group 1 participants will be allocated to a sub group by the event committee based on their previous best time.
We are offering 2 ‘women only’ start groups this year. This does not preclude women from selecting any other start groups.
Group 1 under 4:30hrs
Group2 4:30 – 4:50hrs
Group 3 4:50 – 5:10hrs
Group 4 5:10 – 5:30hrs
Group 5 5:30 – 5:50hrs
Group W1 5:30 – 6:10hrs women only
Group 6 5:50 – 6:10hrs
