Ride for Kiwi kids living in hardship
You can't ride without the right gear. And a child can't show up to school and learn without their essentials either – good shoes, a warm jacket and food. Fundraise for KidsCan through the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge and help give Kiwi kids the basics they need to thrive.
Every rider on the start line at the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge has been through the same checklist:
✅ Bike serviced.
✅ Shoes that fit.
✅ A jacket for when the weather turns on you halfway round the lake.
✅ Food and hydration sorted, because you can't ride for hours on an empty tank.
Take any one of those things away, and the ride gets a lot harder – maybe impossible.
For thousands of Kiwi kids, not having the basics is a daily reality. KidsCan works alongside more than 1500 partner schools and early childhood centres across the country to help make sure children experiencing hardship have what they need to learn. A jacket, so winter doesn't become another reason to stay home. Shoes that fit, so a wet, cold walk to school doesn't mean a day spent in damp socks. Food, so a child can concentrate on learning and not be distracted by hunger.
None of it is complicated. All of it makes the difference between a kid who can take part and one who faces barriers to joining in.
It's the same logic every rider already understands. You don't ride your best on willpower alone. You ride your best because the essentials were taken care of before you started. Take one of those away, and even the strongest rider on the course is fighting an uphill battle before they've even turned a pedal.
For a child, it's no different. School is their ride. It's where the building blocks of learning happen, day after day, lesson after lesson – but the race can be lost before a child even steps into the classroom if they don't have the basics.
