I Am Hope is a New Zealand charity dedicated to improving the mental health and wellbeing of young people across Aotearoa.
We believe every young person deserves to feel heard, supported and understood, and to know they are never alone in whatever they may be going through. Our mahi is about breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging open and honest conversations, and making it easier for young people to ask for help when they need it. Too many of our rangatahi wrestle with harsh self-talk and runaway thoughts that leave them feeling isolated. When young people realise these thoughts are universal, they’re more willing to seek help. We show them they’re not alone and connect them with support.
Through our school and community programmes, we visit schools across New Zealand to connect with tamariki and rangatahi, sharing real stories, encouraging conversations about mental health, and reminding young people that it is okay to talk about how they feel. Our Little People, Big Feelings programme helps primary school children understand their emotions, build empathy, and learn the importance of kindness, inclusion and looking after one another. By creating safe, supportive spaces for these conversations, we aim to give young people the confidence to speak up, reach out to trusted adults, and support the people around them.
We are also home to Gumboot Friday, a campaign that raises funds to provide free and timely counselling for young people aged 5–25 across New Zealand. We know that getting help can sometimes feel overwhelming, and cost or access should never be a barrier to support. Gumboot Friday helps connect young people with counselling when they need someone to talk to, giving them the opportunity to work through life's challenges with professional support.
By fundraising for I Am Hope we can keep going into schools and make a difference early in children's lives with the Little People Big Feelings programme, provide free resources and ensure young people connect with a counsellor via Gumboot Friday.
