Our Event History
The Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge is more than just a ride - it’s a New Zealand icon, forged over nearly five decades of passion, community, and endurance. What began in 1977 with just 26 riders has evolved into one of the country’s most sought after cycling events, drawing thousands of participants each year from across New Zealand and around the world. Widely regarded as the nation’s premier cycling experience, its reputation has been cemented from its many industry awards it has achieved over the years.
From its early days with the Taupō Cycling Club, to transformative leadership under Rotary and Taupō nui-a-Tia College, the event has continually evolved, adapting to innovation and trends in the cycling industry, and unforgettable prize experiences that have helped shape its legendary status. Today, under the stewardship of the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge Trust, it remains deeply rooted in community purpose. As a Rotary-led event, it gives back in a meaningful way with tens of thousands of dollars distributed annually to community groups, and further event surpluses reinvested locally through the Lake Taupō Rotary Club Charitable Trust.
At its heart lies the iconic 160km ‘Round the Lake’ - a full circumnavigation of the stunning Lake Taupō, but the Challenge offers far more. With road, mountain bike, gravel, and family-friendly options, it’s an inclusive celebration of cycling that welcomes everyone, from first-time riders to weekend warriors and pros.
Events like this are why Taupō proudly holds its place as both the Cycling Capital and Events Capital of New Zealand - a destination where community, landscape, and sport come together to create something truly special.
