You’re coming to do the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge? Why not make a weekend of it?

The Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge might be the main event, but there’s plenty more to see, do, eat and enjoy while you’re here. Whether you’re bringing the family, making the trip with your riding mates or turning event weekend into a well-earned getaway, give yourself a little extra time to soak up Taupō.

After all, you’ve done the training. You may as well enjoy the weekend too.

Arrive & Settle in

If you can, get into Taupō with plenty of time before event day.

Check into your accommodation, get your bike sorted, register and check out the expo, before slowing things down. Have a wander through town, grab a coffee, stretch the legs and start soaking up the buzz as riders arrive from around the country.

There’s something pretty special about Taupō on Cycle Challenge weekend. Bikes everywhere. Plenty of nervous energy. And a whole lot of people counting down to the same start line.

Take in the Lake

Lake Taupō is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular places, so make sure you take some time to enjoy it off the bike too.

Head down to the lakefront for a walk, find a spot for a coffee (or another type of beverage 😉) with a view, or simply sit back and take in Lake Taupō with the mountains in the distance.

Fuel Up

A big ride deserves good fuel.

Taupō has no shortage of cafés and restaurants, so make the most of them while you’re in town. Get your pre-ride meal sorted, find your morning coffee spot and, most importantly, decide where you’re celebrating afterwards.

Just remember: the night before the ride probably isn’t the time to completely reinvent your nutrition strategy!

Save something for Sunday

You’ve done the hard work and ticked off the bucket list, but you don’t have to head straight home.

Stick around on Sunday and make the most of being in Taupō. Check out Huka Falls, jump on a cruise to the Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings, explore some of the region’s geothermal sights, take an easy wander along the lakefront or find somewhere good for a long recovery brunch.

If your legs are asking for something even more relaxed, Taupō is also a pretty good place to find some hot pools and let the body recover.

Stay a little longer…

For those with an extra day or two up their sleeve, event weekend is a great excuse to explore more of the wider Taupō region.

There are walking trails, mountain biking, geothermal landscapes, lake activities and plenty of incredible scenery right on the doorstep.

You came for the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge. There’s no reason you can’t squeeze another adventure into the trip.
