Dismantle the stigma around mental health
I Am Hope is a youth-focused charity transforming how New Zealanders understand and support mental health. Founded by Mike King, we work to break stigma around mental health and make it safe to talk about the ‘inner critic’ we all experience.
Through practical support and advocacy, we empower young people to feel heard, valued and equipped to navigate life’s challenges. We do this by teaching emotional literacy in schools, tertiary institutes, workplaces and to parents, and providing access to counselling. We’ve delivered over 150,000 sessions nationwide helping young New Zealanders access free counselling through Gumboot Friday (no GP required). The aim of the Gumboot Friday platform is to provide a bridge between public mental health services and the immediate needs of young people, providing counselling services to them, free of charge. Any young person between the age of 5 to 25 who seeks help from Gumboot Friday is connected with a qualified mental health practitioner of their choosing, no GP referral required. Visit www.gumbootfriday.org.nzOur Little People, Big Feelings programme has reached 47,000 students, building resilience early. Our "Little People, Big Feelings" program focuses on improving emotional literacy in schools and challenges the stigma around so-called negative emotions like anger, frustration, and sadness. Today, many children believe that happiness is the only acceptable emotion and feel 'broken' if they experience anything else. We teach them that all emotions are normal and valid, and there are no inherently 'good' or 'bad' emotions.Supporting I Am Hope helps create real, measurable change for young Kiwis.
