Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge

The Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is New Zealand’s premier cycling event set in the picturesque Central North Island.

Riders can choose solo, endurance or relay challenges based around a 160 km circumnavigation of Lake Taupo and the event has recently added a range of mountain bike challenges to complement the road events. While the event is largely non competitive and caters for every level of rider it does offer three race options for elite cyclists.

The event regularly attracts in excess of ten thousand riders and in 2006 was admitted to the prestigious UCI Golden Bike Series, thus gaining recognition as being one of the world’s top seven rides.

The Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is organised by the Taupo Moana Rotary Club and any proceeds from the event are returned to the local community.

Humble beginnings…
The event started in 1977 with 23 cyclists riding a circuit of Lake Taupo and has grown to many thousands of riders participating in 17 different categories on the day of the "Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge", supported by a lead up week of cycling activities.

The organisation is based around a voluntary trust board and organising team supported by outstanding professionals who give their time to ensure thousands of people achieve something pretty special - riding around Lake Taupo.

The Rotary Club is truly proud of the event and through this incredible day each year the Club has been able to support a number of exceptional community organisations and projects. We hope you can join us for the day, it is something you will remember for a life time.
